Quick answer: Zakopane is about 105 to 110 km (65 to 70 miles) south of Krakow by road. The drive usually takes around 2 hours, but can stretch to 3 hours or more on winter weekends and holiday days. Buses take roughly 2 to 2.5 hours, and the fastest trains take just under 2 hours, with many slower services. From Krakow Airport, the road distance is about 115 km.

How far is Zakopane from Krakow?

Zakopane sits at the foot of the Tatra Mountains, close to the Slovak border, directly south of Krakow. The exact distance depends on where you start, because Krakow is a large city and its airport lies to the west of the center.

Starting pointRoad distance to ZakopaneTypical drive
Krakow Old Town / city centerAbout 105–110 kmAbout 2 hours
Krakow Airport (KRK, Balice)About 115 kmAbout 2 hours
Katowice Airport (KTW)About 200 kmAround 3 hours

On a map the distance looks short, which surprises many visitors when they see the travel time. The reason is the last part of the route: once the road leaves the expressway, it narrows, climbs into the hills and passes through towns, so the final stretch is slower than the kilometers suggest.

The route: what to expect on the road

The main road between the two places is known locally as the Zakopianka. It starts as the S7 expressway heading south from Krakow, which makes the first part of the journey quick and easy. Further south, the route continues on a regular road through Nowy Targ before reaching Zakopane.

This is one of the busiest holiday roads in Poland. On Friday afternoons, Saturday mornings, Sunday evenings and during school holidays, traffic heading to and from the mountains can build up, especially on the final stretch. In winter, snow and ice add more time. On a quiet weekday the trip is usually close to 2 hours.

By bus

Buses are the most popular public option. They leave from the regional bus station in Krakow, right next to the main railway station Kraków Główny, and run frequently through the day. The fastest services are a little under 2 hours, while most take around 2 to 2.5 hours depending on traffic. Buses arrive at the Zakopane bus station, a short walk from the town center. Seats can sell out on busy weekends, so booking ahead helps.

By train

Trains run directly from Kraków Główny to Zakopane, where the railway station stands next to the bus station. The fastest trains now take just under 2 hours, but many regional trains are much slower, so check the journey time before you buy a ticket. The train is a comfortable choice if you dislike winding roads.

By car

Driving gives you full flexibility, but parking in the center of Zakopane can be difficult and paid parking is common. In winter, check road conditions before leaving and make sure the car is properly equipped for snow.

By private driver

A private driver combines the speed of a car with door-to-door pickup, and you do not need to deal with parking or mountain driving yourself. It is the most practical way to visit Zakopane as a day trip from Krakow, because the driver waits and brings you back the same evening. See our Zakopane Tours from Krakow for a private day trip.

Can you visit Zakopane as a day trip from Krakow?

Yes. With around 2 hours each way, a day trip is realistic and very popular. Plan for about 4 hours of total travel, which leaves several hours in Zakopane for Krupówki Street, the Gubałówka viewpoint and regional food. A full private day usually takes 8 to 10 hours from hotel pickup to return.

If you want to hike to Morskie Oko or ride the cable car to Kasprowy Wierch, the day becomes longer, because those places are beyond the town itself. For these routes, see Morskie Oko Tours from Krakow and Tatra Mountains Tours from Krakow.
